Everyone was in this situation: One moment you are super confident about your game and suddenly you are shaking like a leaf and producing shots you considered not even possible.

The beauty about golf is that it is completely honest. Every shot is a result of your own skills and mental condition. That said being said  it happened to me too, often enough.

But how can that be? It’s as if somebody or something pushed a button and activated your anxiety mode. [clearboth]

Mental Game Buttons

These triggers are what you want to focus on if you are working on your mental game.

You have to think hard and be brutally honest to yourself to find them.

Is it other people watching that you don’t know? Is it making short putts?

Is it putting in general?

The thing is if you know the situations that can get into your mind you can be prepared the next time you are faced with them.

Then you can do something to not fall into the same trap like closing your eyes and taking a deep breath. It sounds simple and it actually is.

You just have to be aware of your emotional hot buttons to get your control back.

What does fear ultimately mean?

It means that you are actually afraid of not being able to deal with it. That’s it!

You are afraid of something because you think you can’t deal with the possible outcome.

Once that sinks into your mind you don’t have to be afraid of anything in golf anymore. Because what could be the worst thing that could happen to you during a round of golf.

That you hit it out of bounds? Missing a putt? Come on, you can deal with that. And once you realise that you can deal with everything you are not afraid anymore.

If you want to know more about that idea read the book: Feel the Fear … and Do it Anyway by Susan Jeffers. It’s short, it’s good and to the point.

Attack you fear to get rid of it!

If you really want to go for it you can even try to throw yourself into the water so to speak.

Try to expose yourself to the situations that push your buttons deliberately. Maybe ask your flight partners to stare at you while you are swinging.

Or let them make noises while you are putting. Have fun with it. This way you will realise that it’s all just in your head.

This way you will learn to focus your mind like a laser beam and get rid of your fear whenever it is at your doorstep.
