But usually the promises the big companies make are not really kept.

In the end you cannot buy a lower handicap.

Take a look around in the pro-shop of your local club.

You want to find the oldest equipment you can find in the shop.

Ask for old or used equipment. Usually the  equipment that is for rent is pretty old too. So that is an option as well.

If you get a weird look tell them it is for an experiment and you simply want to try those clubs and maybe even buy something.

Under the odd circumstances that there are not any old clubs to be found in your pro-shop start looking on the internet.

Just get two or three old clubs for fun and training purposes.

Things you should be looking for are: old drivers, old blades, wedges and putters.

Once you have gathered a few clubs take them with you to the practice tee and do a side by side comparison with the equipment you are usually using.

Do a couple of shots with the old wedges for example and then do the same shots with your own wedges.

Take a  closer look at the clubhead design and what was changed over time. You will probably notice immediately that old does not necessarily mean worse.

In fact you might even find some gems that you would not have tried otherwise.

If you want a real challenge and some fun, try to find a two iron and old drivers with low loft (eight to nine degrees).

Those clubs are especially hard to play. Maybe you have heard the old joke that not even god is able to hit an one iron.

Well, once you tried to play a two iron you will think it is a lot funnier.

The lesson to learn here is that technological advancements do have a positive effect on your game, but not as much as marketing is trying to tell you.

  • Find some old clubs in your local pro-shop or on the internet.
  • Practice your full swing using both – old and new equipment.
