When every move they make is just right.

For golf that mental state would be very hard to achieve, because a single round takes such a long time with long pauses in between shots.

And most importantly, you are not reacting to the ball like in other sports.

When someone throws a ball at you in baseball or basketball you can react to the specific situation.

In golf the ball always just sits there. Some people even say it defies them.

I think the truth is that it is nearly impossible to stay in the zone for a whole round of golf.

I think it is much easier to try getting into a specific state of focus and concentration for each separate shot you face.

A good way to do this is to have a routine you can fall back on for every shot you take. Something like a ritual.

Try to internalize the following and try it yourself with a couple of shots or build your own.

First imagine a glowing big circle around the ball in front of you. It should be big enough, so you can step into it with your club.

This circle represents the zone. Once you step into this area, your only focus will be the ball and the shot you want to perform.

Block everything else from your mind that could distract you from your task, e.g. people talking or other noises.

If you notice that you get distracted, get out of your circle and step in one more time.

Imagine the shot you want to perform, get into position and go for it.

To imagine your mental focus as a visual area around the ball, can help you a lot to keep your mind from being distracted.

  • Imagine a visual zone around the ball in front of you.
  • When you step into it, focus only at the task at hand.
  • If you get distracted, get out of your visual zone, concentrate and
    step in once more.
