5 Valuable Life Lessons You Can Learn from Golf

Like any sport golf can teach a lot of valuable lessons for life. Many people who begin to play golf  soon start to notice that there are more aspects to the game that go beyond technique or score.

Once you appreciate the game as a whole you can learn all kinds of things about yourself. As Hale Irwin put it:

Golf is the loneliest sport. You’re completely alone with every conceivable opportunity to defeat yourself. Golf brings out your assets and liabilities as a person. The longer you play, the more certain you are that a man’s performance is the outward manifestation of who, in his heart, he really thinks he is.

Lesson 1 – Patience

Rewards come slowly with golf. It’s somewhat of the exact opposite of the instant gratification we are being taught everywhere nowadays. There are no shortcuts or real secrets in golf. Only with time and patience there can be found great succeses in golf and in life.

Lesson 2 – Discipline

You reap what you sow. Even the most talented golfers in the world have to put their time and effort into the game or else they wouldn’t be able to compete.

If you want to get something for nothing golf’s not the right place to for. In that case you should stop looking at all and start thinking about what might be wrong with that idea. This sounds a little preachy I know.

But you know what I mean. If you put your share of work into your swing, the rewards will eventually come.

Lesson 3 – Tolerance

Although history has shown that golf wasn’t exactly a place of tolerance the rules and etiquette which are the basis of the game stand for respect and honor.

Golf teaches you to be respectful to all other players no matter their skill level.

The handicap system makes it possible to compete on all different levels without being unfair to anyone.

Lesson 4 – Humility

Everybody who spent a little time learning golf learns about humility first hand. First you think you have figured it all out to be crushed the next minute.

Only if you understand the essence of the game you say to yourself that’s golf and go back to the drawing board. If you brag too much the game of golf will send you a message in return sooner or later and that’s a valuable lesson to be learned right there.

Lesson 5 – Accountability

For every shot there’s only one man to blame – oneself.

There’s no team or partner you can project your own faults onto. For every shot and every decision you can only blame yourself. Once a player accepts this truth and uses it to improve his game and maybe even his life he gained a lot of power.

Of course there are a lot more lessons to be learned in golf as there are in life. If your want to share some of your own ideas or stories, feel free to add them to the comment section or share on twitter.

Getting into a sport that can teach lessons like humility and discipline sounds quite interesting. My sons are growing up quite fast, so I feel like an activity like this where we can bond together and develop habits like these sounds great as a family. If I can find any place that offers golf lessons, I’ll take my son with me for sure so that we can have a good bonding hobby along with it.

My father’s been looking to get into a hobby to try and add some color to his life. If he can get into golf and have some life lessons learned as a result, that might be the ultimate way for him to settle into retirement with a little more entertainment. I’ll start going to a golf course with him so we can get that kind of patience developed.
