For a right-handed golfer their right hand and arm is usually used for power, while their left hand controls the clubface.

Others say that golf is a two-handed sport and that, therefore, both sides play an equal role for accuracy and power in the golf swing.

Were you recently in the situation to do something with your other hand, e.g. tying your shoes with your left hand, if you are a righty?

It probably felt awkward, didn‘t it? It is funny, how our brain seems to draw nearly no connection between our two sides.

But because you have to think, when doing something with your off-hand and your brain makes new connections, you actually seem to learn more for your main hand.

That is true for golf, too. So for this exercise I want you get a left-handed mid iron (a 6 or 7 iron will do).

You can probably lend one, if you do not own one by chance. Get to the range and start hitting balls.

Do not get discouraged quickly. It is normal that you do not hit anything if you have never done this before.

Then, when you have hit a couple of balls switch back to your normal side. You are probably surprised how your normal swing suddenly feels different.

Change a couple of times between your off side and your normal side.

If you like this exercise, maybe consider buying a cheap seven iron to repeat this exercise once in a while.

It is great to mess with your brain and to get a new look onto your own swing.

  • Get a mid iron for your off-hand, e.g. a lefty 7 iron if you are a righty.
  • Start hitting balls with it. Alternate sides after you have hit 20 balls or so. Try to get your off hand swing as fluently as you can. Take it slow, though.
