Some people argue about golf being a sport in the first place.

Especially people who’ve never played golf before tend to do so.

I don’t want to go down that road now but I want to make two points clear.

If you want to play a round of golf over 18 holes or more successfully you have to be fit and flexible. On the other hand it’s also true that many golfers don’t do anything for their fitness.

Yet fitness and flexibility are the main factors next to technique giving your swing its power. You definitely don’t want to be one of the latter. But is there something like golf fitness?

If you don’t do anything fitness related yet try to think about hings you could do on a regular basis that you enjoy. If you are actually doing something I congratulate you and want you to review what you are doing.

The key to fitness and flexibility is mainly about doing something regularly.

You don’t have to do a strict regimen of workouts six times a week like Tiger Woods or other athletes to stay fit for golf. [clearboth]

Golf Fitness Tips

These tips will help you to get the right perspective when you are thinking about fitness and golf. So let’s get right to it.

Tip #1: Proper Nutrition

Funny, isn’t it? But it’s true the single most important aspect of fitness is nutrition. If we look at golf. How do you prepare for a round? What do you eat before during and after 18 holes? What do you drink?

Have you ever thought about these questions at all. You can bet that what you eat and drink affects how you are playing. If you are starving you can’t focus properly.

If you clog yourself with a heavy meal you won’t be playing your best either.  So find a good way for you. I like to take some sliced vegetables and a couple of sandwiches that I prepared prior to the round with me.

Thus I can grab a bite whenever I need to. As for drinks I stick with the water.

And I recommend the same to you. The soda pop, hamburger and fries won’t do you any good here.

Tip #2: Don’t worry so much. Just do something.

If you are not doing any specific workout program that’s okay.

If you hate jogging even more than I do, that’s okay too. It does not matter. What does matter is that you do something. If you like other sports, fine. If you go for a walk regularly, fine. If you like to do weight training, fine. Anything’s fine as long as you do it regularly and it’s fun for you. Sitting around idle all day and watching Americon Idol isn’t fine. That’s what will let you age faster, lead you to lose your flexibility and endurance. So get moving!

On the other hand if you have never tried a workout program I strongly suggest you to do so.

You never know. Maybe you love it. I can suggest the Core Performance books. They are great for starters and they even have one tailored to golfers. Check it out: Core Performance Golf: The Revolutionary Training and Nutrition Program for Success On and Off the Course

Tip #3: Work on improving your weak spots

I know it’s hard. But as with golf itself you get the greatest rewards by working on your weakest spot.

Is it flexibility? Is it endurance? Is it your strength?

Work on whatever bugs you most and you will see improvements on the golf course too.

Be honest to yourself and keep reference to where you started. When I started to work on my flexibility I was impressed how much more I could turn with just a couple of weeks exercising.

Tip #4: Don’t over do it

Fitness is important but for golf you don’t need big muscles. You don’t need to be able to lift complete buildings off the ground or anything. In fact it’s even better if you are slim and flexible.

In fact flexibility is the fitness aspect that generates the most power in golf. If you can turn farther you can generate a higher club-head speed. Flexibility will always give you the greater advantage in golf, much more than maximum strength.

So if you like to work out with weights that’s fine. But watch out for your flexibility especially with your arms, shoulders and hips.

On the other hand if you are sore from a hard workout golf’s a great way to relax your body and work against aching muscles by moving them.

Tip #5: Don’t make it hard on yourself

Theres’s a common misbelief that fitness has to be cumbersome, painful and hard to maintain. No pain, no gain right?

But that’s simply not true. Don’t let others talk you into that belief.

Fitness is about having fun and taking time for yourself.

You wan’t to have a healthy body so you can enjoy your life. Like during a great round of golf for example. So just look into what you want and like to do and start moving!
