You read it in books (like this one) and your friends tell you to do so.
Visualize! Of course thinking alone does not make you a better player.
To make use of visualization you must have a proper technique and most importantly experience.
Thinking about water in the desert does not manifest a fountain or an oasis in front of you.
But if you have seen the map and can visualize it in your mind you might be able to walk in the right direction.
My guess is that you play regularly on your home course. So you should have at least some experience there.
Throughout this day I want you to play a mental round of golf on your home course. If you have not done this exercise before, you will be surprised about the things you know and the things you actually do not know.
Visualize yourself at the tee of the first hole and play your way through your home course shot by shot, hole by hole.
What you will come up with in the end is a game plan and course management strategy for your next round.
This visualization exercise is not about having one miracle shot in your mind after the other, but to actually try to use your own capabilities on your home course effectively.
The next time you play a round you will be surprised that you play less reactively to the course, but will be more able to force your game on the course.
Just because you thought beforehand what might happen and how you would do in specific situations.
This is also a fun exercise, if you have a couple of minutes to spare. E.g. while waiting for the bus to arrive.
- Visualize a round of golf on your home course.
- Visualize each shot on each hole.
- Do not imagine one miracle shot after the other but use your real
skill only mentally.
