Chances would not be on the players side, if he or she made it up on the spot.

Yet those creative shots can give a golfer the edge over his competition, because he has a better solution to a particular problem his opponents do not have.

And with more choice he can always try to perform the best shot instead of always falling back to standard play.

So today I want you to work on two shots that you might be able to incorporate into your short game.

The first one is putting out of a bunker. Yes, you read this right.

You probably heard the phrase that a putt is always better than a chip. That is true for the green side bunker, too.

If the ridge is not too high and the sand not too soft, you can sometimes putt directly out of the bunker.

If the conditions are right, it is a very save shot. Just remember that you are not allowed to touch the bunker with your club before your shot.

The second shot I want you to try is chipping with a three wood. This shot can be very effective, when your ball is sitting at the ridge of a green.

To perform it grab your club way down to the metal. You want to hold it at a length of your normal wedge.

Then you use your normal chipping technique to chip it softly onto the green.

The power of the big clubhead will bounce your ball right out of the grass and let it roll straight on the green.

At first, this shot might sound weird. Just try it, it can be very effective.

If you see a professional player perform a creative shot in a tournament, try to mimic him the next time you are on the practice tee.

Maybe you discover something great for your own game.

  • Try putting out of the green side bunker. Do not touch the sand!
  • Try chipping with your three wood. Grip down to the metal.
