Of course you need a very precise iron play and understanding of your own swing to do so.

Whatever your current skill level is, your game benefits from this exercise.

Even if you are not capable yet to reproduce different shots consistently, you can learn a lot if you try. You will get a feeling for how your swing path, clubface position and setup affects your golf shots.

What you want to do is to produce the nine different ball flights intentionally one after the other.

To do this you want to:

  • Curve your ball from left to right (Fade) – low, middle and high
  •  Shoot it straight ahead – low, middle and high
  • And curving from right to left (Draw) – low, middle and high

Once you have accomplished one shot with all three trajectories move on to the next one.

When you have done the nine shots with one club try the same exercise with another club.

To accomplish the different shots experiment with your stance as well as your clubface (open, parallel, closed to target) and ball position (moving it forward or back in your stance).

This exercise is difficult so don‘t be too hard on yourself. If you do this for the first time, it is a good idea to use clubs you have the most control with like your wedges or short irons.

If you stick with this exercise and incorporate it into your training routine, you can learn a lot about your swing and game and have a great benchmark for your own swing.

  • Go to the range and try to actively shape your shots.
  • Your goal is to produce all nine ball flights.
  • Experiment with your stance, clubface, ball position and club selection.
