Take a closer look at the pros in big tournaments. They do exactly the same before each shot.

To fall back on routine makes it easier for the human mind to feel comfortable in stressful situations because you know exactly what to do.

So you should do the same thing and develop a pre-shot routine, fine tune it and stick with it.

I suggest that you write down what you are currently doing. That could look something like that:

  • Walk towards the ball.
  • Assess the situation.
  • Take a club out of your bag, etc.

Think about optimization and how you can make sure that your routine stays the same for every shot.

The key factors are combination and triggers. Try to combine steps, e.g. “While walking towards my ball I assess the situation and take the proper club out of my bag.”

Triggers could be taking a deep breath, playing with the velcro of your glove, or saying something specific in your mind.

You want to tell your body that you are going into shot mode by conditioning your mind with a specific action or thought (a trigger).

Write down your new routine being as specific as you can be. Do not be shy to practice it like an actor would pracice for a scene.

Finally use it on the course regularly and diligently. If you notice you are not sticking to your routine, snap out of it and get right back to it with your next shot.

  • Write down your current pre-shot routine.
  • Use combinations and triggers to refine your routine.
  • Write down your new routine and be as specific as possible.
  • Practice your new routine.
