Many golfers that struggle with the consistency of their game suffer from a poor transition.

Often enough they take the club back too quickly, and then fail to complete the backswing before starting the downswing.

I used to do this myself a lot. It can be a deceiving thing. Because your swing looks good, but you are off by a mile because your timing is not right.

You want your transition to be quick and smooth at the same time. So do not be violent with your transition.

A good drill to work on this is to stop at the top of your backswing for a count of one. Just stop, do not change anything, and especially do not look at your club or your hands.

You want to keep your spine angle and proper posture because after your short pause you can rip it as hard as you are used to.

After the pause focus on your hips. Let them initiate the downswing but do not let them outrun your arm-club-unit. If you are a fast swinger, this drill might feel awkward at first. You might need a couple of tries before getting used to it.

Obviously you do not want to incorporate the pause into your actual swing. But this drill will help you to develop a smooth change of direction at the top.

This smooth transition is key to transfer the power from your backswing effectively to your downswing.

You will be surprised once you get it how much power your are suddenly able to generate without any effort.

  • Work on your transition.
  • Practice your full swing and pause for a second at the top of the backswing.
  • Keep your spine angle and posture. Do not look at your club.
  • Focus at your hips and a smooth change of direction.
